In 1949 the western sectors controlled by France, UK and US were merged into the Federal Republic of Germany known as Western Germany. The USSR controlled sector became the German Democratic Republic (GDR) known as East Germany. Germany joined the European Coal and Steel Community in 1951. Then in 1954 Germany joined the Western European Union, NATO in 1955 and the European Economic Community in1957 as one of the six original members (Belgium, France, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and West Germany). In 1990 Germany was reunited which meant the GDR was incorporated into the EC. The EC then became the European Union in 1993. Germany It is part of the Schengen Area, and became a co-founder of the Eurozone in 1999 and introduce the Euro currency in 2002. ratified the Lisbon Treaty in 2007 which came into force in 2009.
