Greece

Greece became a member of the European Communities (from January 1st 1993 the European Union) on January 1st, 1981. There was no referendum on the issue. In 2001 Greece abolished the drachma in favour of the Euro, once more without a referendum.
In the beginning the economy flourished. But soon the structural weaknesses in the Greek state became evident, particularly as the weak state was unable to force many sectors to pay their taxes. It became evident that the Greek economy was not able to cope with the Euro conditions in 2009 the deficit of the Greek state budget was at 12.7 percent of the country’s annual income, the GNP, and the problems have been growing ever since.
In 2010 the International Monetary Fund and the European Central Bank agreed on lending Greece €45 billion on condition that the Greek government agree to tough austerity measures.
The result has been growing unrest in the country, culminating in the Syriza election victory on January 25, 2015.
A solution might be for Greece to leave the Euro and return to the 3,000 year old Drachma.
