On 23 October 1989, Hungary became a democratic parliamentary republic after end of the Soviet Union.

Officially, the Republic of Hungary, Joined the European Union on 1 May 2004 and is also a member of NATO, the OECD, the Visegrád Group, and the Schengen Area. The official language is Hungarian, which is the most widely spoken non-Indo-European language in Europe.

After 10 years as a member of the European Union, Hungary does not have a target date to join the Eurozone and adopt the Euro, Hungary still uses its currency, the forint but now a move to the single currency is no longer of "immediate interest," according to the Hungarian government's international spokesperson, Zoltan Kovacs.
